Virtual homes to be our reality?
We’ve all seen the situation in the movies. Someone is driving through a city and the advertisements are personalized as each car drives by. Then, as he/she makes their way home, they are able to tap into their home network and maybe they start cooking dinner or draw a warm bath, from their car, so that it is precisely ready when they get home. To many people, this seems to be a distant reality that probably won’t come true, at least not in their lifetime. Or so they think. A journalist in New Zealand recently reported on visiting the Panasonic laboratories in Tokyo.
While there he saw a number of upcoming advertisements and figured they were futuristic dreams of the company. And then he entered their laboratories/ demo space and quickly was awoken to a new reality. According to the reporter a demonstrator could control the entire home with a ring he wore on his hand. From the food in his kitchen to the large flat screen monitor. Which begs the question, how quickly could this technology advance to the point where you can take that device anywhere in the world and be directly connected to your home without being any where near it. Rumor also has it that sometime in the future newspapers and magazines could have compute-like screens with “live” news updates and moving advertisements. At first this may seem a bit far fetched but as technology improves and consumers are more tech-savy it does seem to make quite a bit of sense. Now we are left to see how quickly this vision becomes a reality for all.
