Announcing Network Magic 4.0!
After months of development and testing, extensive beta testing and a sneak preview release, we are excited to release Network Magic 4.0 to the world. If you are an existing Network Magic Premium customer, this is a free upgrade. If you are currently in the 30-day trial with a prior version, this is what you really want. If you are currently using and enjoying the free version of Network Magic, you are also encouraged to upgrade to this new version.
You can upgrade to 4.0 through Network Magic itself (Go to the Tools menu and select “Get Updates”) or by downloading it from www.networkmagic.com/download .
Network Magic 4.0 helps you in several new ways, including:
- New Wizards to help you more easily get your networking tasks done.
- A new, more powerful Network Repair feature that helps you solve more networking problems.
- A new Internet Speed Test that helps you determine if your Internet connection is slow, and then troubleshoots the problem if it is.
- A new personal dashboard of everything going on in your network called the Status Center.
As with any major software release, we’ve also continued to make improvements across every aspect of Network Magic.
If you haven’t already, we encourage you to give Network Magic 4.0 a try.

First time user. After effusive praise, two small gripes follow.
First, WOW. I was pulling my own hair out trying to get file sharing up and running on my home network. I'm a professional programmer, and backing up my PCs (4 of them) over my network is crucial to me. But I just couldn't get it all working.
Downloaded Network Magic, and after installing on all my machines, I'm DONE. DONE! Printer sharing, file sharing, network health... it just all works, and it's all right in front of me! I can't describe the hell I went through trying to figure out DHCP, DNS and firewalls. And now I DON'T CARE because Network Magic just does it for me! Talk about a silver bullet. Wow, what a relief.
The only thing NM4.0 appears to do not quite right is recognize somewhat incorrectly my IOGear USB 1-port Print Server. Actually, it recognizes the node on the network where that server exists, but it also claims that every PC on my network that makes use of said Server also has a dedicated printer of its own. So the network map shows me 5 printers, when I really only have one. Doesn't affect the usefulness of the product, but it's confusing.
Only other gripe is that I didn't find Network Magic sooner. I spent a lifetime Googling DHCP, DNS and variations thereon, and not finding a reference to your product. I can't remember what the magic keywords were that led me last week to an article mentioning NM, but please do yourselves and all of your potential customers a favor, and find a way to get yourselves into the search results for "DHCP howto", "DNS problems", and the like. There must be millions more people like me who will love Network Magic, but they haven't found it yet.
Kindest regards,
John Pirie

All excellent suggestions. We will be previewing out 4.1 release in January which takes the first step into the whole 'keep track of what you kids are doing' arena.

After the morons who run our IT dept. got hold of my laptop all my home networking was incapacitated. I worked on the matter for months (no help from them) right up until about one minute after I installed Network Magic. Suddenly (it really was that fast) not only were all of my computers actually connected, but so was my printer and PalmPilot (something I could never make happen before). THANKS!!!

After several unsuccessful attempts, it's great to find a program that makes file sharing and printer sharing so easy. NetMagic is the painless solution.
thanks>>>rob

The main reason for wanting to use Network Magic is to print from my MAC to the HP Printer on my PC. My laptop works through the D-Link Router but it is a PC. When will a MAC option be ready for release?

Jeff, I have 2 LAN-based computers on one side of a building-to-building wireless LAN and a another desktop on the other side. My laptop may be attached by 10Base-T on either side of the wireless link from time-to-time. I use MAC permissives to enhance security and prefer to retain them. My laptop travels with me and often connects to the Internet on various corporate LANS. Will your product track my various configurations as the laptop moves and recognize when I'm on a foreign LAN? I don't want to inadvertently create confusion when I'm at a customer's site. Could you explain to what degree our existing router settings are retained or modified by your product? Having a rather dynamic network(connection success varies for no apparent reason)makes your product look very attractive.

am a bit confused as to your licensing rules. Are you or are you not subscription based - that is do i have to buy a new license every year to continue using your product. Also, am interested in V4.0 - can i get this on CD rather than downloading it. please respond to rferance@aol.com

I just activated my NM 4.0. I used the test internet speed and then test network speed. It told me my local network speed was greater than the cable modem speed so that was not the bottleneck.
However, I think it would be much more useful if this feature would test the local network speed AND report the actual speed (rather than just saying it was greater than my modem speed). Can this be done or is there another way of getting this information?

I've been recommending NM to people, because it looks like a good product. But I'm up to having it on 3 machines now, and the more I use it, the more it seems to be buggy. I have three questions in with tech support now on the general topic of 'why won't all three show me all machines with the same status at the same time'. I don't expect you to get personally involved, but if you could suggest anything that I can do that I haven't done -- and I've read the faqs, shut down firewalls, and all of that -- I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks.
(FWIW: I have a 5 machine licence, and am running 4.0.6313.0-PureO)

I have Trend Micro Internet Security 2007. Will Network Magic conflict in any way with it?

I downloaded a trial version of NM 4.0 and installed it this morning on a PC (win2K) and a notebook (winxp home). It took a lot more than 5 minutes to get everything running perfectly, file sharing, printer sharing, etc. I was thrilled at how well the program worked. I had to go out during the day so I turned everything off. When I came home and rebooted the PC, the network could not be found. The laptop worked fine. I went through all the drills, trying to get NM to "repair my internet connection." Nothing worked. I then uninstalled the program from both computers. The laptop still has the internet as before. The PC will not go back to its previous state, so now I am hardwired to the router.
I feel it would be too much trouble to have to install/reinstall the program every time I reboot my PC so I guess I'm not ready for Network Magic. If I upgrade the PC to winxp, maybe I'll try again. As it is, I no longer have a wireless connection to my PC and the stupid cat wants to play with ethernet cable!
I am very disappointed. Everything was so good and I was ready to buy -- maybe later....

Hi Jeff
I havent stopped smiling since I download Network Magic. After months of wireless network problems I've finally found a product that gives me everything it said it would. It's a wonderful user friendly interface and so easy to set up and it worked from the word go. Definately the best $20 I've ever spent. Sincere thanks to everyone at Network Magic.

A couple questions:
I have a home network with three hard-wired desktops. Various wireless notebooks connect to the network from time to time. I am considering upgrading to Network Magic Premium. Is the three-computer license sufficient, or would I need a more costly license to enable me to monitor & manage the wireless notebooks when connected?
Because the router is in one end of the house, there are spots with a weak signal where I want occasionally to use a wireless notebook on the home network. I want to install a second router at one of the hardwire connections at the other end of the house for better wireless signal strength and coverage. However, installing the second router requires complicated adjustments to network protocols and, frankly, baffles me. Will NM Premium enable me to add and configure a second or even third router to the network?
===================
Gary,
For you needs I would suggest the 5 license version. As far as additional routers goes, if you are actually going to segment your IP network, that is probably beyond what the home version wants to handle. IP segmentation is not for the neophyte! If you are instead going to use the routers as either switches or just use hubs, we will handle it fine.

Hi Jeff,
Just wanted to say how much I love your product. Before I started using Network Magic I had a lot of problems with my wireless connection. Mostly due to my own inexperience. I spent most of my free time trying to secure it or just keeping it to begin with. I was forever having others hacking into it and locking me out. So I invested in a better router (one with more security features)and purchased your product. Since that day, I have not had to think about my home network again. It is secure and rock solid, and for that I can not thank you enough. Your product does exactly what it claims to, and in this day and age, I find that rather refreshing.

Hi Jeff,
You should mention for current customers who are running Network Magic 3.1.6172 and 3.1.6174 and using Network Magic's Wireless Network Manager, to remove the Wireless Network Manager and reconnect to the Internet with Windows Wireless Network Manager, before upgrading thru Network Magic to Network Magic 4.0 and beyond.

Noted and passed on. Thanks!
