Network Magic 4.1 is Here!
A few weeks ago I posted about the Preview version of Network Magic 4.1 being available. Well we finished-up putting 4.1 through some pretty rigorous testing and it is now available for FREE download at www.networkmagic.com. If you haven't tried it out, you don't know what you're missing!
There are two main new features, Network Reports and the Network Magic Advisor. As I wrote about before, Network Reports is a feature geared towards parents. It sends you a daily email report letting you know the sites your kids are visiting online, the amount of time they are spending online and the software applications they are using. What does all of this really tell you? Well, with this email, you know if your kids are chatting on IM and posting on MySpace rather than typing up their homework. At Pure, we don't want to do the parenting for you, which is why you can't use Network Reports to block certain sites, but we do want to help keep you informed as to what is going on in your home. And that is exactly what this feature does.
The second new major feature is the Network Magic Advisor. Think of this feature as having your own personal nerd living in your house. Not sure what a "NAS" device is? Clueless about how to upgrade your memory or RAM? You can use the Network Magic Advisor to learn more about not only these topics but many other things as well. It will give you helpful information about the devices you already own and you can use it to learn about new products you are thinking you might be interested in. For now, the products need to be slightly related to the home network; sorry you can't get movie reviews here, yet...
So go ahead, try out the new features and let us know what you think. We are constantly working to improve all of our features and would love to know what you think we can do to not only make Network Reports and Network Magic Advisor more valuable but how we can improve upon all of our features.

I bought network magic and it's at last got my son's pc hooked up to the router after many failures. However, it tells me on the 2 pc's I copied the files onto I only have the trial version.
What's going on?
--------------
Make sure you go on to each computer, and open up Network Magic and input your activation key. Here's info on how -

I have a six year old computer that has had Windows XP upgrade on it for 4 years. Within the first two months of this year I have gotten four new computers two of which have Windows Vista installed. I have been trying to get a home network working for weeks with no luck. I am sure that three note books, of which one is running Vista, and two desk tops, one of which is running Vista and the other is six years old might have had something to do with it. The note books are accessing the net work wirelessly and the desk top wired through a Link Sys wireless N router. My brother in law, whom has had some networking training and success in setting them up, even tried to get it working for hours with no luck. I found Network Magic a month ago and installed it on the old computer but being leery of trial software I did not follow through with the program and stopped using it. Over the last few days my Brother in law and myself have heard positive things about Network Magic and read some positive reviews. I decided to give it another try. Within one hour I had the home network up and running flawlessly on all four computers with all printers and hard drives available on all four computers from all four computers. I immediately activated the program with an eight computer license. Network Magic is truly an amazing program. I highly recommend it for anyone from the first time computer user to the professional networker.

Just downloaded Network Magic, what a great program. For the first time all three PC's and printers work together. One problem, ever as we added each PC everything on the network ran slower & slower. Not just the PC but the spool to the printer, the game system on the router, etc. Windows are hanging up while opening and closing and after adding the 3rd and final PC today, trying to open & close programs is like watching grass grow. What am I doing wrong?

Hmmm, well we'd like to help you diagnose that. Please contact our customer support at http://www.networkmagic.com/support to get assistance.

could you add the Apple Airport Extreme to your list of supported list of routers? Also does my setup of a PC running XP pro and a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.4 ( The MacBook also runs XP pro by using Parallels Desktop) and I also run the PC desktop from the laptop using Windows Remote Control Desktop. I use the Airport Extreme Router (desktop ethernet, laptop wireless). Does this setup present any special problems or limits for Network Magic? I need more info before I purchase the Premium version. Thanks in advance Jim
---
Hi Jim,
It sounds like you have a relatively complicated setup running at home. Network Magic does work with the Apple Airport Extreme except for two features - Network Lock (wireless network protection) and Net2Go Remote Access. All the other features like printer sharing and file sharing work with that router.
We have not extensively tested Network Magic running on Parallels on the Mac. However, we have a version of Network Magic for the Mac that you can run on your Mac - that would likely be the best bet. You can download that here - http://www.networkmagic.com/mac/ .
I think your best bet is to install the Network Magic Free Version on all your computers and use it as you would on a day-to-day basis. You'll have 30 days to evaluate all of the features. I believe Network Magic will handle your network setup fine, but you will be able to make sure yourself before you purchase.
Thanks for your post,
Mark

I'd been so frustrated trying for months to get an XP, a 2000 and an ME working together on a LAN when I came across Network Magic. I downloaded it one day and installed it in minutes on all machines including shared printers on the ME and XP. My router is a Linksys BEFW11S4 connected to a Surfboard SB4200 cable modem. Everything worked first time including Net2Go; this is extremely good software.

Is there a problem with accessing NETGEAR routers?
I put in the correct nmae and password but I just get an error.
What a superb programme!!!!! We have been a week on and off trying to add a VISTA pc to our net, NET MAGIC added it in minutes - GREAT.
Thanks>
Mike

This sounds like a Netgear issue. You should check with their support team.

Great product and love the map picture to know what is connected/working/etc. One problem but it's not yours. I have two XP Pro computers and one has always been able to see the other, and copy/paste files. However, the second machine has never been able to see the first one. Never have figured it out. NWM can now at least see both ways, but one glitch remains. The problem computer can see all the files on the other one, but any effort to copy\paste a file gets the error msg: 'drive might be full or write protected'. But it's progress. I only need to learn how to kill the firewall on the second one to allow two-way comm.
================================
This could be firewall or a file permissions issue.

Works great, no problems with Beta at any stage. Would you consider adding the channel numbers to the available networks list? This can be of value when troubleshooting wireless dropouts?

A great product, it has really put the ease in homenetworking. A question about the reports though...will this feature slow down the speed of the date coming in/leaving?
=======================
No, the network report uses very minimal bandwidth once a day. You will never know it is there.
Thanks for the great feedback!

I had so many network issues before I found Network Magic. What a fantastic networking solution package. I now have 3 computers on my network all sharing files, gaming together and all sharing 1 printer. Brill thanks.
Question: I am still on the free trial at the moment, is my network gonna fall over and stop working once it runs out, until I have paid for the key?
=====================
Thanks for the great feedback. When your free trial is over, the folder and print sharing features, as well as the network report, will stop. The rest of the product will continue to work fine.

seems to work fine

Yesterday I bought the Network Magic Premium software. In my home network I am using a WL-153 SITECOM MIMO-XR router.
Are there any plans on your side to go and support this router in future so that I can configure this router using Network Magic ? I would love to do this.
Thanks so much.
==========================
We have added it to the list of routers. Stay tuned!

I contratulate you on an exceptionally good-looking product on the screen.
One minor problem with the display, however, is its inability to cope with an XP taskbar at the top of the screen. I am for ever trying to fish the Network Magic display out from under the double-width task bar I use! Perhaps the NM screen could remember its position from the last time used?

just have to say that it's perfect greatest and it's very nice to see you thought of who can't afford to buy it. hope to see more of your stuff like it soon . louie

I really like the idea of the Network Reports. However, the other machines are able to turn on reporting on MY machine. While I don't usually have anything to hide, if I visit www.howtodeclarebankruptcy.com I don't want the rest of the family to know I was there. Can we put a password on the Network Reporting feature so other computers in the house can't turn on or off the reporting?
====================
Thanks for the feedback. We are looking at ways to give one user control over these types of changes.
Posted by: Darren | February 28, 2007 05:08 AM
I was so happy when I installed the trial version of my computers that came with my DLink router, however that was short lived when the print sharing didn't happen. Call me a skeptic, but I found it hard to decide to upgrade when the free trial didn't work. So I didn't!!!
====================
This is almost always a firewall issue. Give our support team a chance to help you fix it.
We are adding significant technology to surface more and more of these types of issues.

While you capture MAC ADDRESSes, it would be very useful to produce a screen that shows mac addresses with the associated IP addresses. This would help in IP conflict resolution. Also would be good if NM would log IP Conflicts as they occur, rather than having to go to the Event Log
======================
All great ideas! Thanks.

I need a very stable product and the 4.0 product is very stable, as I connec to 2 sometimes 3 VPNs simultaneously and need to be able to printer to my USB attached printers, which is the main reason for purchasing Network Magic.
Other than the Reports and Advisor feature, what are the other new, improved, fixed features that you've engineered into MN 4.1?
btw: This is a fantastic solution and well worth the money.
Thanks,
Greg Katz
=======================
Thanks for the great feedback! 'Under the hood', we have made significant changes to the Network Magic engines that handle a lot of the communication and diagnostics, making a much more stable product. We are able to handle a significantly greater number of edge cases that occur on home networks.
As an example, earlier versions of Network Magic would probably not have handles a multiple VPN environment as gracefully as we do now.
It just keeps getting better!

Love the program. Would like: a means to password protect individual files. e.g. Church/Clubs, friends/relatives, work. The choice is either open share with everybody or no share. Since all have confidential information the full value of the program cannot be realized without compromise.
Thank you

I have been very pleased with Network Magic. The network reports are great but anyone can turn them off at the station where they are sitting without any notice to others until the report shows up blank the next day. My 14-year old already did it. It would be nice if one or more computers could be designated as Administrators and disable certain configuration options without a master password or some other option.
====================
Ah yes, the active 14-year old. This represents the hardest networking issue we have ever faced... ;>)
That said, they are also our future IT managers, so I guess we have to work with them.
My advice is a simple rule: You either get the email report every morning or you get the computer, let your 14-year old decide.
We are working on solving this.

THINK YOU ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING.In your next update please run a test with "Register Cure" on.
It will knock of your software.
very annoying for those who paid for both programs and can only use one at exclusion of other.
Please HELP!!!

Hmmm. I ran this through Babelfish and I still can't figure out what it means.

I had great difficulty setting up a home network and connecting to my 2 printers. I downloaded Network Magic and everything worked immediately. I like the app so much I purchased. I had some difficulty with Vista Ultimate but as soon as I updated to Version 4.1 everything worked again. Excedingly Satisfied and would recommend Network Magic 4.1 to anyone.

Network magic was the only way I could get my pc now running Vista to talk to my server that uses XP Home, the only alternative I had was to upgrade my other two PC's to Vista, and I wasn't about to put another £300 in Bill Gates pocket! Thank you Network magic you saved me a bundle!
Posted by: RichMc | February 26, 2007 02:37 AM
Network Magic 4.1 is a nice move in the right direction. The Network reports is nice, but I share the privacy concerns as well.
Some thoughts:
-Network Map:Go vertical and print. It would be much easier to read verticle and more natural scrolling with a wheel mouse.
SystemTray - option to always hide via install option...kinda a stealth mode. Kids are curious if they see icon they click...and could shut it down rendering the Network Report useless.
===================
We appreciate your comments! All great suggestions.

I want to buy Network Magic but Best Buy doesn't have it. I want a hard copy - not a download so I can install it in my 4 computers. What other store carries it?
=========================
Amazon carries the 4.0 version, which will immediately upgrade to the 4.1 version when you install it. Due to the lag time in the retail channel, I doubt any stores have the 4.1 version in a box. If you order from our web site, you do have the option of having a CD mailed to you.
Posted by: Rene Gramonte | February 25, 2007 06:09 PM
As per your email, I was encouraged to take advantage of the "free" upgrade to 4.1.
since I had a paid version. After I downloaded it, it said it couldn't install since there was another version on the machine. So I uninstalled and installed 4.1. Now it tells me its a trial version and I only have 30 days to use it. What's with that?
=========================
If you have lost your original activation code, call our support team, they can provide it for you. If you do have it, use it to activate the new version.

I agree with the last poster, Sheri. When Network Magic is running on each computer, there should be some type of messaging feature (away from web-based instant messaging systems) to communicate between machines on the network.
This would avoid worrying about whether everyone had AOL IM up and running, etc.

I have purchased in december 2006 the version 4.0.6313. Is it possible to update this version with new version without buying a new license key.
=========================
Yes, of course. The tools menu has a 'check for updates' option. Or, you can just download the new version and install it, using your original activation key if necessary.

I have a feature request. I have a server which happens to run a UPnP server...this overrides any other ability to manage the server from the program....even though there are multiple other ports which have management features. It would be nice if the "add device" option allowed you to specifiy IP and port for other management services per node.
Just a thought.
Also, what about a Unix/OS-X/Linux client?
+++++++++++++++++++
It sounds like you may have a bit more than the typical home network. That said, you have some interesting ideas that we will take note of.

I have had Network Magic for a long time (When the cost was annually), and I had given up on it a couple weeks ago. However, new version 4.1.7039.0 update has solved all of my network problems, which I had never been able to do before. I can now share folders for the first time with all of my 4 computers on the network. I could see some improvements with all your previous updates, but 4.1 did it for me.
Thank you,

Is 4.1 compatible with the Vista OS?
==================
YES!!
Posted by: William G Wardino | February 24, 2007 01:48 PM
I have a small home network with three computers. Two are running XP Professional, and they took the 4.1 update with no problem. However, the third one, which is used only occasionally by my granddaughter, who's only 3-and-a-half years old and the computer she uses is too old and underpowered to run anything but Windows 98. I can't get the 4.1 to download to that computer. Is that normal? Will the 4.0 on that computer cause problems for the two that are running 4.1?
========================
Sorry to hear that this is happening. There is nothing in the 4.0 or 4.1 products that might prevent this from working.
Posted by: Alan Sharkis | February 24, 2007 01:06 PM
I like the new Networks Report feature but it would be even better if there was an option to view activity based on different user IDs. This would be very useful specially for laptop users.
===================
We have looked at this option and will continue to evaluate its value to our customers.

I don't think I'm going to use the network reports module. Per the privacy policy, you're going to have a log of every website I visit attached to my email address. While I'd like to have the info for historical purposes, I don't want you to keep it. Two suggestions: 1) Once the information is emailed, delete it off your servers, and 2) allow users to choose which report categories they want reported. I'd love to have the bandwidth report without the others.
=========================
Thanks for taking the time to ask the question.
We thought long and hard about this one, knowing that privacy is a huge concern on the internet. We asked a large number of our customers about this as well. In the end, the value of having an emailed report, as opposed to a report that was only viewable from the home PC, outweighed the privacy concern in our customer's minds. There was no simple way to email from a home PC so we went with the method we have in the product today.
We do not store the data after it is used for the reporting function, and we certainly do not use it for anything else. In addition, the report is an option, if a specific consumer feels the privacy issue outweighs the value of the report, they do not have to use the report feature. In this case, we do not transmit any information. If a consumer is in the preview period and uses the report feature, we do not transmit any URL or application data and this does not appear in the report. It is only when a customer has purchased the product and uses the reporting feature that we transmit the data you are referring to.
In addition, we allow you to select the computers in your home that we will report on, allowing you a bit more control over the information.
We are continuing to look at ways to improve this feature. Privacy is a huge but little understood issue on the internet. Anyone using a browser is leaving personal information all over the internet, typically without their knowledge or approval. It is only the companies that stick to the disclosure rules as we do that seem to draw the fire.
At this point we have many many thousands of customers using the feature, and only a very small handful of people expressing concern over the privacy issue you raise. We will continue to evaluate this and look for solutions that appease everyone.
