A Home Network - Are You Ready?
So, you've had a computer for a few years now. It's probably sitting on a desk in the den, or maybe in a corner of the family room or kitchen with a printer attached to it. And, it's plugged in to the wall, so you have to use it where it is.
You know how to email back and forth with your friends and family. You've gotten used to checking your bank balances online, transferring money now and then. And you know how to shop and order things from your favorite sites - that part is easy!
But summer's coming and maybe you'd like to be able to check that bank balance or send emails from your deck, or in a room away from the kids and the TV. And speaking of the kids, maybe you just want your own computer without having to worry about what the kids are downloading that could wipe away your family photos without warning. Then it’s time to get a laptop and get it connected to the Internet wirelessly. Once you do that, guess what? You’re the proud owner of a home network and you can surf the net anywhere you want! You won't be tied to that computer in the corner.
Up next, how to set up a home network (it's easy - I promise!)

I HAVE NETWORK MAGIC INSTALLED ON MY WIRELESS LAPTOP AND MY WIRED DESKTOP AND IT'S WORKING GREAT. MY QUESTION IS HOW CAN I FIND AND SHARE THE SCANNER THAT I HAVE CONNECTED TO MY DESKTOP? MY PRINTER SHARING WORKED RIGHT AWAY. THANKS FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE.
TERI
-----------------
Network Magic doesn't include USB devices such as scanners in the Network Map. You can, however, scan something and copy that file to the computer the scanner is attached to and then share that file throughout the network.

I hope you can help me. I have Hughes net,
a sony desk top year 2000 and just purchased a notebook aandi it is hooked up
wireless through a netgear router.
I need super simple.
is it possbile to hook up a printer to my notebook and desktop. I have a cannon MF printer.
or would it be easier to just buy a wireless printer for my notebook and how would that work?
I hope you can help.
thank you
Peggy

Yes, you should be able to connect your printer directly to your notebook or desktop computer. (I would connect it to the desktop.) First, follow the printer's directions for connecting it to your computer.
Then, when your printer is connected to one of your computers, if you want to share the printer with both of your computers, install Network Magic on each computer. It will add the printer to your network and you can share it. This means that you can print to it from the computer that is not connected to it. (This process assumes that both of your computers are connected to your Netgear router.)

Wow! I have been using computers both for personal use and business for a number of years.
As our children have gotten older, we have had to vie for computer time and it was becoming frustrating.
My wife bought a laptop and we bought the kids a new desktop PC. We bought a linksys router WRT54GS and proceeded to "create" our network. What a nightmare!
Nothing worked. We could not see each other in our home networks and could not print to printers in the network from other computers.
To make matters worse, one of the computers runs Windows XP Pro, one Windows XP home and one Windows Vista! That really through the whole home network for a loop.
The other day, I was in a local software store and happened to see your program. I thought what the heck and bought it.
In two hours, we had all of our computers on the network, we can print to both printers from any computer and we can share files and folders! We can even see what the kids are doing and looking at on the internet anytime we want.
I was so impressed at how intuitive this software was. Even when we ran into minor bumps in the file and printer sharing setups, your program diagnosed the exact problem and directed me with details how to fix it. I can't think of anything I would do to improve this program. I have over many years, wasted money on utility software that does not live up to it's name. Please feel free to post my comments for promotional or testimonial purposes. I am one very satisfied customer.
I do have one question though. We actually have a 4th computer which is not currently hooked up to the network. Can I obtain a one time license for this computer somehow as we used our three licenses on the two desktops and the laptop?

Thanks for the comments. We love to hear from people using our product and knowing that it's making their life (and home network) easier.

I have a netgear router installed on my lan of 5 computers. I installed network magic on one of them and tried detecting a router but came up with nothing. I won't detect my router that is clearly there. What's the dilio?
-------------------------
Network Magic automatically detects the router connected to the computer, so I'm not sure why yours wasn't detected. Please contact our technical support team for help with this. You can reach them at www.networkmagic.com/support.

I am disabled and would like to try wireless printing. I cannot afford to spend much $$$ due to the fact that I live on a bugjet. I need any one's help.
--------------------------
Download the free version of Network Magic (www.networkmagic.com/download) and give it a try. If you have a router and a wireless-enabled computer, you can print to any printer connected directly to the router, or connected to a computer that's connected to your router. The printer sharing feature is available for 30 days with the free version, and if you like it, you can purchase Network Magic for $29.99.

Richard, thanks for the comments. Regarding your scanner, if it's connected to your network, Network Magic should display it in the Network Map. Contact Technical Support and let them help you resolve why it's not showing up.

I installed Network Magic on my PC and laptop, now the I can't get the printer to connect for the laptop. It worked with my old Linksys router.

I've scheduled Charter to come out and set up a home network for me including 1 desktop and 1 wireless laptop. Does Newwork Magic accomplish the same thing I'm having them come out to do? May I safely cancel that appt and trust Network Magic to accomplish this?
-----------------------------
Yes, as long as you have a router installed, Network Magic can connect your desktop and wireless computers together to share one Internet connection. If you don't have a router or need help setting one up, you may still want to keep your appointment. However, even if you use Charter to set up your home network, Network Magic can help you keep it connected, secure it from outside intruders, and assist you in adding more devices such as a printer or new computers. It's still worth downloading even after you have a network set up.

i have a desktop and a laptop. i have broadban on the desktop and want to share that connection w/ the laptop through an ethernet cable. PLEASE HELP ME!!!
-------------------------------
Steve,
Do you have a router? You need a router to share the Internet connection with more than one computer, even using an ethernet cable. You need to purchase and install the router, and then you can connect both computers to it and share the Internet connection.

I have 2 PCs and a laptop. All three computers are OS WinXP Home. I would like to setup a home network that the second PC and the laptop can share the same internet connection of the PC that is connected to the internet, and have access to the files on that PC and the printer.
My questions are. What do I need to setup a wireless network? The laptop has a wireless adapter built in and the PCs don't. Second question. Will Network Magic create a network to include all three computers.
Thank you
Dale
---------------------------------
Dale, you've come to the right place! Yes, Network Magic can help you connect all 3 of your computers and your printer together. First, you need to get a couple things from a computer store: a router (D-Link is a good choice), and a wireless network adapter for your second PC. The adapter can be either a card or a USB device. The people at the computer store can help you decide which to get. Connect the router to your PC that has the Internet connection (refer to the router Installation Manual). Then install the wireless network adapter on the second PC. Finally, install Network Magic on each computer. It will automatically detect your router, the three computers, and your printer. Then use Network Magic to set up printer and file sharing. Good Luck!

I have added an I-MAC to my wireless network of one PC plus one laptop. Will I be able to install Network Magic on the MAC computer to use Network Magic to manage my wireless network? I have a Linksys Wireless Router Model WKPC54G and an airport on the Mac. The PC is hardwired to the router, the laptop is connected using a Linksys WMPG54G Wireless PCI Adapter. The airport on the Mac finds the wireless connection without Network Magic but I would like to use Network Magic to manage my Network. Thanks for any help you can give me.
------------------------------------
Hi Gwen,
We currently have a free Beta version of Network Magic for the Mac available. We're working on this Mac release but in the mean time, we're making it available for our Mac users. Jeff E. wrote an introductory post about this release and provides a link to download it. Give this a try: http://www.networkgarage.com/2007/01/ (Scroll down to the second post).

Haven't hooked up my computers yet? But do I have to purchase the program again if I have 3 desktops and plan to purchase a laptop later? The current program only allows for three computers?
----------------------
Great question! The standard license allows you to install Network Magic on 3 computers. If you add more computers to your home network, you can upgrade your license to install Network Magic on up to 8 computers. For details, see the License Upgrade page on our Support website: http://www.networkmagic.com/store/license-upgrade.php

I am having a great deal of difficulty setting this network. I have my host(desk computer, and 2 printers on the network but I am unable to get the laptop set up. Any help will be appreciated.

I'm assuming you have Network Magic installed on your desktop computer, and that computer should be connected to a router. Next, install Network Magic on your laptop and it will automatically be added to your network. For more help, contact Support by email at Support@purenetworks.com, or by phone at 888-812-9402.

I want to print from my laptop to the printer hooked to my desktop by a parallel port LPT1. What are the names to use? Do I need to put the printer driver on my laptop when I send a file to the desktop printer?
---------------------------------------
You need to make sure Network Magic is installed on both the desktop computer and the laptop, and that the printer driver for your printer is installed on the laptop. The printer should then appear on the Network Map and can be shared with all other computers running Network Magic. If you need help with this, contact Technical Support by email (Support@purenetworks.com) or phone (888-812-9402).

I added a third computer to my network. It was placed at the original location of the first desktop. I have a wireless laptop and then with an ethernet connection added the old computer and it is not recognized by Netware Magic. I've scanned several times to find it, and it will not be added to the network.
