Windows Vista Makes File and Printer Sharing Harder
Pure Networks' CEO Jeff Erwin was featured on the most recent TechPodcast Roundtable Discussion. Jeff runs through how you share files and printers in Windows Vista (be afraid, be very afraid - it is not pretty) and compares this to how you do the same thing in Vista with Network Magic.
You can listen to the podcast here.

The first rule of providing care is DO NO HARM.
No question network security is important. No question I do not understand many of the settings. However, consider the following:
1. Installed Network Magic
2. I use my notebook in "wired" mode, when attached to the docking bay. And "wireless" mode when moving around my home. After installing Network Magic, was suddently unable to establish a connection via the notebooks wireless device. After a lot of pain, i found that Network Magic had enabled Mac Address Filtering. No particular warning, just enabled it.
Generally, I like setting new devices, in this case an XBOX 360, with security turned off. When everything is working, I turn on whatever security features that i need.
What option in the program can i invoke to have Netork Magic NOT CHANGE MY ROUTER SECURITY SETTINGS WITHOUT MY PERMISSION???
Security is a difficult problem. Vista's UAC doesn't get it right. Neither do the major vendors. (McAfee, etc.) When impossing security greater than i have, that IS GOING TO AFFECT ME. I NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT UP FRONT, AND HAVE THE OPTION TO TURN IT OFF.
Thank you.

Hi there,
By default, Network Magic does not have wireless security turned on when you install it. After installation, a user has to go into Network Magic's wireless protection area and turn on wireless security.
So we are in agreement with you in terms of first getting all devices connected and running without security, and then adding the security layer on top of that afterwards.

Hi, i have xp on my computer and vista 32 on a wireless laptop i have installed network magic on both computers i can see the shared files but when i go to access them on either it comes up with the same info cannot access shared folder then it explains what it may be, this computer can communicate with blah the other computer where the shared folder is located, but accessing the shared folder is failing. This is most likely a result of a firewall on the other computer, please confirm that it is configured to allow file sharing. I have checked both firewalls to see if they are allowing the file sharing and allowing network magic through and they say they are, also i have turned both firewalls off just to see if it makes any difference but it doesnt, this report i keep getting shows up on both computers when i try to access the files. On the laptop i use AVG anti virus and on the desktop i use F-Secure my router is a BT Voyager 2110 it would be much appreciated if anyone could give me some help.

Yes, I think you are on the right track thinking a firewall is likely causing the issue, but it seems like you have already tried to fix it by turning the firewall off.

I've been using your software for over a year now and just added a new laptop--with Vista Home Premium--to my home network. I've been pulling my hair out trying to print from it. I went so far as to buy a new router; yet still no success. I stumbled onto this link quite by accident, and will try the aforementioned suggestions as soon as I end this message--I will then report back.

I had almost had it with trying to network my XP Pro desktop to my new Vista laptop. Nothing worked. Even tried a free trial of another softawre package shown at C-Net. It was not able to keep the network connection for more than an hour or so. I got an e-mail from ProAdvantage with your software shown. Went to your site to research it. After a short look see I downloaded it on to a flash drive. Installed it on the XP Pro and the Vista. Within 30 minutes after downloading I was networked and had print sharing with the desktop as well as full file sharing between both units. I still have 10 days on the free trial to go. I can say this. I will be buying this software. I have experenced no problems, and when the laptop comes home from work, it logs into the network without a hitch. Network Magic works as advertised. As a Computer Tech for over 30 years, I will now recommend Network Magic to any of my customers faced with networking XP to Vista. Great product as well as Great price.

I have been trying for ages, without success, to network together 3 PCs all running Windows XP. Internet access hasn't been a problem but File/Printer Sharing has proven beyond me. After I installed Network magic on all 3 PCs, and followed the excellent Firewall instructions, I was able to share files and printers between all PCs in a matter of minutes. As I am a visual sort of person, I particularly like the Network Map and Shared Folders displays. The only slight disappointment is that my Belkin Router (F5D7633-4) is not on the list of routers required for Net2Go

Hi. I've been using your trial for about 20 days. Yes, typical MS horror stories, file sharing issues, printer sharing, etc.. Your software loaded and all is well. Wait ... I repaired a friend's PC here a few days ago and plugged it into my network. (3 PC's, all XP) That PC jumped right in, no problems. I removed it & plugged mine back in and since then it can't access the shared folders from my Main Office PC. It's says it is offline, but of course it's not. The Main Office is the base of operations more or less, were the broadband router & cable modem are located. Yes, this is a wired network. Everything I've tried fails to allow access from tnis PC to the shared folders of the main office. HELP!! I'm buying your NM software tonight as it's great but need some help with this issue please.
Thanks ... Pat - PM Sales

Hi Pat, thanks for your post and sorry you've had this problem.
With sharing issues, it is often a firewall setting. Here is one thing to try from our support site:

Ken,
Thanks very much for the feedback. We actually have been getting a lot of information back from people that the only way they can get file sharing and printer sharing to work with Vista is use Network Magic. So you are not alone and we are of course glad to help. It seems that Vista has indeed made networking harder.

I run a small computer company and teach computers at the local college. We have 5 computers in the office. We brought a VISTA Business unit online, with 2 HDD's and a RAID 10 array, for file sharing, but nothing we did would allow us to access the RAID array over the network. One laptop could get in with no problem, but the main computer system was blocked, no matter what settings we tried. I even went so far as reinstalling VISTA, along with the manditory call to reactivate it. Every senior tech in my company (3) tried to figure it out, but to no avail. Finally, we called a friend at Microsoft but after about an hour he gave up and told us to call tech support and pay the $245. I went to some friends at PCMag who said to try your utility. Believe it or not, it almost went without a hitch. I had a bit of trouble naming network drives. I kept getting told they were already shared but with the wrong names. Once I figured out how to fix that, everything was working flawlessly.
I bought your software, gladly. At $39.99, it's cheap at twice the price.
Thanks for saving our network.

Just watched the section on File Sharing in Vista. Typical MS horror story.
I've been struggling to set up a home network with 2 XP Home PCs and a printer for about 3 days. The XP wizard doesn't work (surprise!) and I was beginning to think I'd need to become Network expert before I could resolve the problems.
I then started looking on the Web for some better way to do it and subsequently discovered Network Magic. Within less than 30 minutes my network was up and running! Furthermore, I wasn't presented with any of the Martian gobbledygook served up by Microsoft. Network Magic makes it's virtually a no-brainer! Thanks for a great product!
